Taking the SAT Math level 1
There are a few differences between taking the SAT Math level 1 and the SAT math level 2 subject tests. The breakdown of the questions is a little different between the tests, with additional subject matter covered on the level 2 math test.
The four main content areas on the SAT Math level 1 include number and operations, algebra and functions, geometry and measurement, and data analysis and probability. The main focus on this test is on algebra and functions as well as geometry and measurement, so those are the areas where your student’s SAT subject tests tutor is likely to focus most of their attention on reviewing with your student. Our tutors also help students with test taking strategies. If your student gets nervous before the test, our tutors can work with them on building skills such as breathing exercises to help them relax before they start answering questions.
The great news is your student prepares for the test is that the questions are multiple-choice, and they have the ability to use a calculator on the test. As your student works with their math tutor, they will learn different approaches to answering questions, as well as test taking techniques. For example if they don’t know an answer and want to come back to it, they may be encouraged to put an answer down on the test as guesses are not penalized.
The SAT Subject Test in Math Level 1 is an hour long exam that features 50 multiple choice style questions. The possible scores are between 200 and 800, with 800 being the top score. Your student’s Math Level 1 tutor will work with them to decide on a goal score to aim for and will help them focus their studies to achieve that score.
Taking an SAT subject test is not like taking a normal exam at school. Some sections of the math level 1 test may have differing time limits, which can add an extra degree of challenge for your student. Our tutors will help your student feel comfortable with the test, potentially even running through mock exams as they are prepared for what they’ll face on test day. Our tutors will help them manage their time most effectively in order to get through the entire exam. As they build a rapport with their tutor, they can go over things that make them nervous about tests so that they can be addressed in a relaxed environment.
Asking questions in a traditional classroom can be nerve-racking for some students. You don’t want to bring the attention to yourself, particularly in areas of weakness. This is not something that your student has to worry about when working with one of our tutors. They are encouraged to ask questions, and it is a one-on-one learning environment, so there’s no one else to worry about. Asking questions will help your student learn more and potentially even push themselves further into the material that they are tempted the master and showcase their skills in.
Another advantage of working with one of our tutors is that they will learn how your student studies and learns best, allowing them to apply that to the review sessions. Unlike in a traditional classroom where the curriculum is set and teachers may only teach things one way, due to both their personal style and time constraints in the classroom, our review sessions are much more flexible. As our tutors learn about your student and their learning style, they will tailor the review sessions to align with how your student learns best.
